EASTER RALLY LATEST NEWS

On Sunday April 2nd, I drove over to inspect the fields on the farm to find out what crops are growing and to check on available fields. The majority of the fields are in spring barley which is on just up so the great news is that these barley fields are all fine to walk over. Better still, the farmer was out with his roller pressing down the seedlings leaving the roller lines behind resulting in a perfectly flat surface! I also noted that there were other fields that were cultivated and dead flat but no crop emerging as yet. One of the Wicken village fields was in stubble and last years field 11 that was rough ploughed has stubble turnips grazed down by sheep. We have new fields for you for 2017. A large field close to Deanshanger village that was grass last year has since been ploughed and is nice and flat. The 2016 wheat field over the road on the Mountmill farm side is now in emerging spring barley so perfect this time and the Roman villa field that was only cultivated in 2016 is also in emerging spring barley and has been rolled. New fields this side too; pasture fields behind field 26 ( that was great for Iron Age and Roman) to the Great River Ouse. We will allocate different fields for Friday and Saturday but Sunday will be over the road; maps will be handed out. The campsite is also in tip top condition.

DIRECTIONS

The rally site is off the A422 between Buckingham and Stony Stratford. POST CODE MK19 6JU

This Easter we are delighted to bring you a special Spring rally on the superb detecting land between the three villages of Wicken, Deanshanger and Beachampton. Our very successful rally here last spring produced a diverse range of finds from Iron Age, 1/4 staters, Anglo-Saxon chip carved brooches & sceats to many Roman and medieval finds. You can see some images of part of what was found by clicking this link: http://weekendwanderers.info/Dig-Reports/dig-reports.html

The fields have all been well turned over and will most probably be growing spring barley so should be perfectly flat. Where else can you get such ideal search conditions at this time of year! So, with such a lovely looking location between three very historic villages, don't hesitate to get hold of your ticket asap! Time Team held a dig at Wicken but your farm features a Roman villa with a Roman road traversing the camping field.

In all, we should be able to access over 400-acres of arable land but there is a good chance we can get on pasture fields around the River Great Ouse that flows through Mountmill Farm.  The fields are accessible by foot from the campsite which is centrally located via a long hard track that is gated at the main road. Camping is on a very level and firm grass site that is private, secure and safe.

HISTORY & RESEARCH

WICKEN
The Prehistoric era according to Wikipedia, includes the earliest archaeological features around Wicken in the form of a prehistoric ring ditch. An archaeological survey on land near here in 2014  revealed a wide spread scatter of middle to late Iron Age pottery sherds. A Roman villa is located here on the farm and a small Roman settlement is located to the south east of the village. The place-name origin of Wick is perhaps derived from the Saxon Word Wick for farm, or perhaps the Roman vicus. The village of Wicken is mentioned in the Domesday Book and dates from Saxon times.  Wicken is possibly best known for a Time Team dig here in 2007. The program from series 14 episode 7 was called, ‘A tale of two villages.’ Search on line for 'Time Team report Wicken' to see what they discovered.

DEANSHANGER
The next nearest village that our fields run up to is Deanshanger. A number of Iron Age and Roman settlements are recorded in this parish. The oddly named village of Deanshanger comes from the Old English Shanger, meaning a clearing in the woods hence Daneshanger was a clearing in the woods where the Danes lived. More very interesting facts about this village can be seen at:  http://www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/northants/vol4/pp41-42
